HK Laser celebrates first year in new facility

Fabricators attending the HK Laser open house event discuss the capabilities of the Falcon-FL 6-kW laser cutting machine.

A year after moving into their new 25,000-sq.-ft. facility in Bartlett, Ill., Robert Won, HK Laser & Systems’ vice president, said the company has had reason to celebrate.

“We’ve sold a lot of lasers over the past several months,” he said.

The company kept at it in late September as it invited customers for several open house days the week of Sept. 16, culminating with a golf outing on Sept. 19. These fabricators had the chance to see three laser cutting machines in action, including a 6- and 8-kW machine.

The laser cutting machines all used Corona™ laser generators from nLIGHT, Vancouver, Wash. This fiber laser power source is capable of adjusting the size of the beam in the generator compartment, not the cutting head. As a result, it can adjust quickly between cutting jobs from thin to thick materials.

The machines also featured FiberCUT® 2D cutting heads from Laser Mechanisms, Novi, Mich. The cutting heads have a fully-sealed, purged design that minimizes the chance of internal contamination.

Won said that HK Laser plans to feature its 6- and 8-kW laser cutting machines at FABTECH in Chicago, Nov. 11-14, in Booth A2948.

A Laser Mechanisms FiberCUT® 2D processing head cuts through a sheet of 0.25-in. steel. A Corona fiber power source from nLIGHT is used to generate the 8-kW laser beam.
